Good skin shouldn't have a season. However, this summer I would love to keep the makeup-wearing to an absolute minimum. There is nothing worse than having applied a face full of makeup only to have it all melt off by lunch time. So this year I am hoping for a #makeupfreesummer. Is this a real thing? Yes. Did I just create that hashtag? Maybe.
All this basically entails is me going the extra mile to ensure that my skin is well taken care of. From decent sun protection to a hard-working serum, I want to share a few things I have added to my everyday skincare routine which I believe will all have a hand in helping me make my #makeupfreesummer a reality. First thing is first...
A DARK SPOT CORRECTOR
What: Kiehl's Dermatologist Solutions Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution
Where: Kiehl's counters/Edgars
As hard as we may try, we simply aren't immune to the harsh effects of the sun. While it is a contributor to dark spots and hyper-pigmentation, our skin is sometimes discoloured and uneven as a result of previous illnesses, injuries or pure genetics. My experience with chickenpox as a child was intense and as a result I bare some spots where the bumps used to be. Then there is the general unevenness along the sides of my face - which in all honesty I hate - then a few dark spots as a result of pimples that popped during my teenage years. I have been using the Kiehl's Dermatologist Solutions Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution in attempt to correct some unevenness. While I wouldn't say it has performed miracles, I have certainly noticed an improvement in the overall tone of my skin. I of course concentrate the product in areas that require the most attention and those for me are new spots as a result of pimples. While there is activated Vitamin C in this bottle, the presence of alcohol has me feeling apprehensive of singing its praises too quickly. I still am searching for "the one" (dark spot corrector) but for now, this is will do.
AN ENERGIZING FACE OIL
What: Kiehl's Daily Reviving Concentrate
Where: Kiehl's counters/Edgars
Skin can become dull and tired lookout as the day wears on and its for this reason that I would recommend investing in an energizing face oil. The Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate is a holy grail for me so I was very excited with the release of the Daily Reviving Concentrate. The difference between the two is that the latter is responsible for reviving the skins defenses throughout the day with Midnight Recovery restores skin to a more smooth and healthier state. I have actually become a fan of face oils because of the Kiehl's Daily Reviving Concentrate and you will be super pleased to know that the formula is non sticky and non greasy, absorbing right into the skin leaving it to appear youthful and radiant. This has now formed as part of my Kiehl's trio and I use it daily.
What: Eucerin Sun Gel-Creme Oil Control Dry Touch SPF 50+
I am sure as a kid you remember being slapped with what probably was a full bottle of sunscreen. If not, you'll wish you had. There is the a common misconception amongst the Black African community that people of colour don't need sunscreen. Perhaps the term "Black don't crack" may have been used on more than one occasion? I am here to tell you that you have been strongly mislead. Black DO crack and probably in the worst way! I am a mega fan of the Eucerin Sun Gel-Creme Oil Control Dry Touch SPF 50+ for a number if reasons... Its high sun protection factor means that I am shielded against sun-induced skin damage - hyper pigmentation, dark spots, cancer. The formula is non sticky, non greasy and mattifying making this suitable for oily and acne prone skin types. You'll love the fact that you can also use this as a makeup base on days when BB creams or a lightweight foundation are an option. It is of course great for sensitive skins too as it is fragrance-free and paraben-free. I am also a fan of the size because it's super convenient to pop in my purse when an unexpected turn to the beach occurs.
What: Eucerin Intensive Lip Balm
Chapped lips don't have to be your reality this summer. This is a simple one to solve and if you know your lips are prone to getting dry/dehydrated really fast, I suggest a hardworking lip balm. For me, that's the Eucerin Intensive Lip Balm. There was a period in early 2015 where my lips were constantly peeling. A doctor recommended this lip balm and since then, I haven't had dry looking or peeling lips. In fact, this little tube of tricks has become a holy grail item for me and I won't stop repurchasing anytime soon.
How will you be maintaining healthy skin this summer?
