Well, well, well... What do we have here? The new Maybelline Dream Velvet Soft-Matte Hydrating Foundation just landed on South African shores and a fair share of the blogging community is excited. Described as soft, matte and hydrating, I couldn't wait to put it to test. I was sent two shades by the lovely Maybelline South Africa team and this was my experience...
The two foundation shades sent to me were 92 Caramel and 95 Coconut. I am not too sure where these fit on the Maybelline Dream Velvet Foundation shade spectrum but it would be my opinion that these are the darkest shades. Upon initial speculation, I surmised that 92 Caramel would be too light and 95 Coconut too dark. As an initial impression, I swatched both on my hand and found the lighter shade to be a little patchy and uneven while the darker shade had a beautiful, even finish. Either way I grabbed my foundation brush and went ahead to try them both out properly.
I applied 92 Caramel all over my face using a stippling brush. I thought it would be too light but it wasn't unmanageable. If you think you're in between these two foundation shades like I am, I would suggest you opt for 92 Caramel and warm it up with a contour product, bronzer and/or blush.

I would also say that its texture reminded me of the matte mousse foundations except I found this one to be much more hydrating. In terms of coverage, it's definitely medium buildable. I didn't use a primer before hand.
Do I think dry skins will enjoy it? Yes. Like the tube says, it is a soft-matte hydrating foundation. Used alone, it won't leave you looking dewy so if that's the look you're going for I would recommend a radiance boosting primer prior to application. However, I can see this one slipping and sliding for oilier skins. I'm combination skinned so my t-zone tends to become shinier the fastest so to be on the safe side I would set it with a translucent powder.

I could tell 95 Coconut would be a tad too dark for me as an overall foundation shade, however it was perfect for contouring. I loved the consistency of this one much more. It slid onto the skin beautifully and I believe it would make a great contour product should you be against powders and not too sold on cream contours too. I loved the way it set and then blended into my skin.

As you can see, the deeper foundation shade warmed my whole face up quite beautifully. I am altogether surprised and pleased with this foundation. I would definitely recommend it ladies. It's one to have for everyday purposes and would make a great addition to your beauty bag. Scroll down further for hand swatches!
